Tempe Location

In 1995, the Conservatory moved from its Phoenix location to Tempe, in order to accomplish the goal of building facilities to exacting specifications. Tempe was a perfect choice for an educational institution, being very much a college town. With a current population estimated at about 160,000, Tempe is small by way of comparison, considering an estimated population of 3.3 million in the Phoenix metro area. Approximately 50,000 of Tempe’s residents are students at Arizona State University (which is one of the five largest universities in the US.) When nearly a third of a city’s population is comprised of students, you can definitely call it a college town!

Tempe is a clean, beautiful city surrounded by many wondrous natural features like the towering saguaro cactus and the exotic desert landscape of the Southwest. This is a city with many amenities for young adults attending school. Housing is abundant and secure. There are many outdoor activities to be enjoyed, with a summer-like climate nearly year-round. Tempe Town Lake on the Salt River just north of downtown is a wonderful place to relax and engage in water activities.

Sun Devil Stadium on the campus of Arizona State University is the home of ASU’s Sun Devils and was the site of Super Bowl XXX. The NCAA national football championship occasionally takes place here in the form of the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. The NBA’s Phoenix Suns play just a short drive away at America West Arena in downtown Phoenix.

Tempe has spawned musical successes like The Gin Blossoms, the Refreshments, and the Pistoleros. The Valley of the Sun is also home to a number of successful recording artists such as Stevie Nicks, Dave Mustaine and David Ellefson of Megadeth, the Meat Puppets, and others.
